State of Michigan Continuing Education Requirements

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs ("LARA") is the State’s real estate licensing authority. LARA requires that all licensed real estate agents and brokers meet certain continuing education requirements before their licenses will be renewed:

  • Michigan has a renewal cycle of 3 years. During the 3-year license cycle, each licensee needs to complete 18 hours of con ed. The current cycle is the M-cycle, which ends on October 31, 2015.
  • The current 3-year cycle began on November 1, 2012 (which means licensees need their full 18 credit hours before October 31, 2015, for their licenses to be renewed).
  • Licensees are required to take a minimum of 2 credit hours per calendar year of continuing education that involves law, rules and court cases regarding real estate. The courses that satisfy the legal course requirement have separate course numbers and are categorized as “law” on our “Courses” page.
  • Though the average is 6 credit hours per year, you can take your minimum of 2 credit hours per year (for law) and spread out the other credit hours over the 3 years as you desire, as long as you have a total of at least 18 hours of continued education from approved real estate courses by the conclusion of the 3-year cycle.

In addition, licensees cannot duplicate courses during the same 3-year cycle. That means you will receive credit for your courses as long as the course number and course name is different from the other courses that you have taken. 123 Con Ed LLC keeps track of those courses you have taken with us to ensure no duplication of our courses.

You can check your con ed credit hours here (after you type in and search for your name, a box will appear with your license information. From there, click on “continuing education”).

If you have any questions about your hours or courses, contact LARA at 517-373-7353 or by e-mail at bcslic@michigan.gov.
